Get a rare behind-the-scenes look at sumo training during the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament season. Watch professional wrestlers run through their rituals and techniques in an authentic setting near Hakata Station — closer than most practice venues, so you spend more time watching and less time travelling. Your guide shares the history, traditions and sheer dedication behind this demanding sport.
This is a real training session for wrestlers preparing for a tournament — not a staged show. After about an hour at the stable you're free to leave if the sumo was all you came for. Everyone else walks on through Hakata Old Town: Canal City, Kushida Shrine, a traditional machiya merchant house, Shofukuji (said to be Japan's first Zen temple) and Tochoji, home to one of Japan's largest wooden seated Buddha statues.
Along the way you'll learn about Hakata's role as a historic gateway to Asia, and how it shaped the region's culture, festivals and daily life.

“We had a great morning on this tour — a small group with two guides, one from Czechia and one from Japan. I particularly enjoyed watching the sumo practice and the giant Buddha towards the end.”
“Fantastic! The sumo training and the shrine tour through the old town of Hakata were very informative and also a lot of fun. Highly recommended!”
“A good mix of activities. Watching the sumo wrestlers practise was very interesting — very different seeing it live and hearing the impact of bodies. Then a walking tour of Shinto and Zen temples. The perfect amount of time.”
